Answer: USA

The Library of Congress is the world’s largest library and the de facto national library of the United States. Its collection was growing at a rate of roughly two million items per year; it surpassed more than 170 million items in 2020. The Library of Congress serves members, committees, and staff of the United States Congress, as well as other government agencies, libraries around the world, and the scholars, researchers, artists, and scientists who utilise its resources.

Also serves as the national hub for library service to the blind and physically disabled, and it hosts a variety of concerts, talks, and exhibitions for the general public. Those living outside of Washington, D.C., can access the library’s expanding electronic resources by visiting the Library of Congress website at http://www.loc.gov.

The library was established on April 24, 1800, when United States President John Adams approved the $5,000 provided by Congress when the United States capital was relocated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Washington, D.C. It was housed in the new Capitol building for nearly a century. However, on August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812, the British burned down the Capitol and the White House, destroying the library’s initial collection of 3,000 volumes.

On January 30, 1815, Congress authorized the acquisition of former President Thomas Jefferson’s personal library of 6,487 books for $23,950 to restore the library’s collection. Another fire burned down two-thirds of the collection on Christmas Eve 1851. Many of the volumes have been replaced since then.
