Answer: Japan

In February 2022, Japan unveiled its first hydrogen-powered train, which is a step toward the country’s 2050 objective of becoming carbon-neutral. The two-car “Hybari” train costs over $35 million (4 billion yen) and can go up to 140 kilometres (87 miles) at 100 km/h on a single hydrogen refuelling.

East Japan Railway Co. collaborated with Toyota Motor Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. to develop the hydrogen-fueled train. The commercial services of the train are expected to start in 2030.

To achieve net zero energy, the county has made hydrogen a primary clean-energy source. The government has stated that it intends to increase hydrogen usage to 20 million tonnes by the year 2050.

With the second-generation Mirai, Toyota expects to increase production of hydrogen-fueled vehicles tenfold. Additionally, more fuel-cell buses and commercial vehicles will be on the road. Furthermore, energy companies like Iwatani Corp. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. are working to build hydrogen supply chains in order to lower the cost of the gas.

Europe until today has been a pioneer in hydrogen trains, with Alstom SA in Germany deploying the first train in the world in 2018. Siemens AG and Deutsche Bahn AG are developing new regional trains and innovative fueling stations, which will be tested in 2024.
