Ostrich

Eagle

Emu

Flamingo

Answer: Emu

The Great Emu War was fought by Australia between November 2 and December 10, 1932, in a bid to cull the growing emu population that was running amok in the district of Campion in Western Australia.

Major G P W Meredith of the Seventh Heavy Battery of the Royal Australian Artillery was in charge of military operations against the emus, which commenced on November 2.

Although the Australian army deployed a few soldiers equipped with Lewis machine guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition, the November 2 effort failed as the emus scattered and only a “dozen” birds were killed.

This pattern continued, and although 2,500 rounds had been fired by November 8, the number of dead emus was estimated to be a paltry 50.

The failure of the army to get results led to very negative media coverage, which, in turn, led to a military withdrawal.

However, the Australian army mounted a second attempt, which was marginally more successful than the first, but even then, the Army managed to kill just 986 emus over the course of the entire war, which led many to criticise it as a failure.

Eventually, with the Australian army proving ineffectual against the cunning and speedy emus, Australia introduced a bounty system to encourage private parties to take the fight to the emus.
