Answer: Union Health Secretary
Rajesh Bhushan the Union Health Secretary, alerted Indian states that have witnessed a spike in COVID cases to be more vigilant. The letter from the central government has gone to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The respective state governments have been urged to continue with their strict testing and surveillance practices.
"States are advised to continue implementation and monitoring of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of Covid-19 and to ensure compliance with various advisories issued by the ministry", the readout states.
Maharashtra, which has been struggling with cases in each wave of the pandemic, has seen a spike in active caseload, prompting Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to address people, saying that restrictions would be imposed again if masks aren't worn, vaccines aren't taken and safe practices aren't followed.
India saw the worst of the coronavirus pandemic in the second wave dominated by the Delta variant. The country gasped for oxygen as there was a shortage of cylinders and the highly deadly variant claimed many lives as well. However, since then, the nation has ramped up its vaccination drive, with most people now going in for their booster dose.
As a result, the omicron variant didn't see as many fatalities, but the high infection rate cast a shadow of worry on the nation. Now, the latest spike has prompted precautionary measures to curb it before the situation goes out of control, as it is prone to do, in a nation as populated as India.
