Beyoncé enjoys playing with her Beyhive. Never one to reveal too much, she communicates by hints, leaving little crumbs for devoted followers to find. Here’s all we know so far about Renaissance, her first solo album in seven years.
In British Vogue’s cover interview with the Queen, editor-in-chief Edward Enninful described the new album’s “soaring vocals and fierce beats” as transporting him “back to the clubs of his youth” in the late ’80s and ’90s. The accompanying shoot was a kind of club child fantasy, recalling the ’70s (the cover is a tribute to Bianca Jagger’s much-imitated Studio 54 arrival on horseback), as well as the “1990s garage scene [and] ’80s excess.” Expect “retro-futurism” parallel notes in “music that will unite so many on the dance floor, music that touches your soul.”
Renaissance, which was first revealed via Tidal, will be released on July 29th, marking the first time Beyoncé has given early notice of a release date since 2013’s self-titled visual album. The album’s first single, “Break My Soul,” was supposed to be released on June 21 at midnight EST, however it was released three hours earlier on Tidal. Could the same thing happen with the entire album?
According to Pitchfork, “Break My Soul” was published on purpose to coincide with the summer solstice on June 21 and herald the beginning of a “new era with new anthems.” However, the song’s release corresponds with another significant date: Beyonce’s earth-shattering debut album Dangerously In Love was released on June 20, 2003, and she immediately became the Queen of both pop and R&B, as well as dabbling in country and rap. It appears that she will soon close that chapter and take over as Queen of Dance.
