‘Shabaash Mithu‘ is the upcoming biopic about Indian ODI Captain Mithali Raj, with Taapsee Pannu in the titular role. The film is helmed by Bengali director Srijit Mukherji, whose movies remain lauded by many and mocked by some in Tollywood.
Rahul Dholakia of ‘Raees’ fame was earlier supposed to direct but then dropped out, saying in a statement “COVID messed up everyone’s schedules, mine was no different.”
The COO of Viacom18 Studios, that’s backing the film, said “Srijit Mukherji will now take over the director’s mantle. Srijit has worked with us closely on Ray and our plans of making a cricket film together will now come to fruition. I am sure he will bring all his passion and craft to this dream film”, as per Entertainment Times.
Mukherji himself noted “Being a cricket buff and researcher, Mithali’s tale has always been an inspiration to me. I was excited since I had first heard of this film being made and now that I am a part of it I look forward to kickstart the journey to bring this exhilarating story to the silver screen soon.”
Mukherji made his Bollywood debut in 2017 with the movie ‘Begum Jaan’, with Vidya Balan playing the lead.
While preparing for the movie, Pannu noted “People throw stones at you and you convert them into milestones”, quoting legendary Indian cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar.
