Gopalan worked at UC Berkeley after getting her PhD and worked as a breast cancer researcher. Her achievements in this sector led to her being recruited to colleges all around the world, where she continued to do research and teach. She earned tenure at McGill University in Montreal after working at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin. She also spent time in France and Italy.
