Tyrannosaurus is a huge theropod dinosaur genus. Tyrannosaurus rex (rex means “king” in Latin), sometimes known as T. rex or T-Rex, is one of the most well-known theropods. Tyrannosaurus roamed what is now western North America, on what was formerly an island continent called Laramidia. Tyrannosaurus ranged significantly further than other tyrannosaurids. Fossils have been discovered in a range of rock formations dating from the Upper Cretaceous period’s Maastrichtian epoch, 68 to 66 million years ago. It was the last known tyrannosaurid and one of the final non-avian dinosaurs to exist prior to the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction tragedy.
Tyrannosaurus, like other tyrannosaurids, was a bipedal carnivore with a huge cranium supported by a long, hefty tail. Tyrannosaurus’ forelimbs were short but extraordinarily robust for their size, with two clawed digits, in comparison to its huge and powerful hind limbs. The most preserved specimen measures up to 12.3-12.4 m in length, while T. rex could grow to lengths of more than 12.4 m, heights of up to 3.66-3.96 m at the hips, and weights ranging from 8.4 metric tonnes to 14 metric tonnes, according to most current estimates.
Although several theropods paralleled or surpassed Tyrannosaurus rex in size, it remains one of the largest known land carnivores, with the strongest biting force of any terrestrial animal. Tyrannosaurus rex, by far the largest carnivore in its environment, was most certainly an apex predator, preying on hadrosaurs, young armoured herbivores such as ceratopsians, ankylosaurs, and possibly sauropods.
According to some researchers, the dinosaur was largely a scavenger. The dispute over whether Tyrannosaurus was an apex predator or a scavenger was one of the longest in palaeontology. Most palaeontologists now believe Tyrannosaurus was a predator as well as a scavenger.
