Amazon Quiz (April 10, 2022): This is the flag of which country?
The flag of Lebanon features a cedar tree on a white strip, with red strips above and below.
The flag's cedar tree, which is a symbol of Maronite Christians, is directly influenced by the mountains of Lebanon cedar, which have been mentioned in the bible 77 times, with Psalms chapter 92 verse 13 saying, "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon." Meanwhile, Chapter 104, verse 16, states: "[t]he trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted."
The cedar also featured in much more modern imaginings of Lebanon. In 1920, the text of the proclamation of the State of Greater Lebanon stated, "[a]n evergreen cedar is like a young nation despite a cruel past. Although oppressed, never conquered, the cedar is its rallying. By the union, it will break all attacks."
Apart from the cedar tree, the colours of the flag also carry heavy symbolism: while the red colour symbolises the blood shed to preserve Lebanon's integrity over the ages against successive waves of foreign invaders, the colour white, on the other hand, symbolises peace.
Lebanon's flag, pictured above, was officially adopted by the country on December 7, 1948.
