The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a cattle herding dog breed that developed in the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire. It is one of two breeds of Welsh Corgis. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are descendants of the Spitz dog breed. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi, on the other hand, is descended from the Teckel family of dogs, which also spawned the Dachshund.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are well-known as Queen Elizabeth II‘s favoured breed, having owned over 30 Royal corgis throughout her reign. Although these dogs have been favoured by British aristocracy for over seventy years, their popularity and demand among the British public have recently declined. They are, nevertheless, still quite popular in the United States. Annual “Corgi Meetups” are held in cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, when hundreds of dogs and their owners gather to spend the day.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is ranked 11th in Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs and is regarded as a good working dog. According to the American Kennel Club, Pembroke Welsh Corgis were the 11th most popular dog breed in 2020.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has upright ears that are proportional to the head’s equilateral triangle. According to the breed standard, the ears should be firm, medium in size, and tapering slightly to a rounded point. The form and appearance of the head should be “fox-like.” Pembroke Welsh Corgis are shorter in length, have smaller ears, and have slightly straighter legs than Cardigan Welsh Corgis. Because of differences in the thickness, length, and direction of hair growth, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi exhibits somewhat lighter marks on each side of the withers.
