Amazon Quiz (July 2): Which company announced that it would recall 2700 of its first mass produced electric vehicles, less than 2 months after launch?

General Motors

Volkswagen

Tata Motors

Toyota

Answer: Toyota

Toyota Motor Corporation has recalled roughly 2,700 units of the bZ4X SUV, less than three months after it was launched globally, due to worries that its “loose wheels” may fall off. The Japanese automaker stated in a recall notification distributed to bZ4X owners on Friday via multiple channels that the move is for all vehicles “in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.”

What exactly is the problem?

According to a Toyota representative, the hub bolts on the wheels of the affected bZ4X battery EVs may loosen “to the point where the wheel can detach from the vehicle” after “low-mileage use.” If one of the wheels detaches from the car while travelling, the vehicle may veer off, increasing the chance of a crash.

Despite the fact that the origin of the malfunction is “still under investigation,” Toyota stated that it had notified Japanese safety inspectors about the problem. “No one should drive these vehicles until the remedy is performed,” the company added. Toyota recalled roughly 2,200 vehicles in Europe, 270 in North America, over 110 in Japan, and 60 or so in the rest of Asia on Thursday. All of these automobiles were manufactured between March and June of this year.

Furthermore, approximately 400 units of Subaru’s Solterra all-electric SUV, created in conjunction with Toyota, have been recalled for the same problem.

What impact will it have on Toyota?

Despite being a long-standing automotive behemoth, Toyota is a latecomer to the EV game. The bZ4X, which will be unveiled in early 2021 as the first in Toyota’s ‘bZ’ (beyond Zero) series of battery EVs, is expected to be the company’s flagship EV offering in the crossover SUV sector. The bZ4X, which starts at $42,000 (about Rs 32,86,000) and is only offered in a few regions, hasn’t exactly lit the roads on fire. Toyota said earlier this year that the model would only be available on lease, citing worries about maintenance, residual battery performance, and residual value.
