Dinesh Karthik, who featured in India’s first T20 International match more than a decade back in 2006, recently became the oldest Indian to score a half-century in the format.
Notably, Karthik is also the only Indian from that 2006 team who is still actively playing international cricket.
Karthik, achieved the feat on June 17, 2022 during India’s T20 International match against South Africa, when he hit the Proteas for an impressive 55 from just 27 balls.
Karthik’s score against South Africa saw him become the oldest Indian to score a T20 International half-century, at 37 years and 16 days.
The 37-year-old’s 55 run haul and his 78-run partnership with Hardik Pandya in the match also helped India out of a sticky situation after the Men in Blue were reduced to 81/4 at one stage.
India managed to score 169/6, and bundled out South Africa at 87, winning the game by 82 runs. The win also helped India tie the series at 2-2, and the series ended in a draw after the final game was washed out.
Karthik’s record is followed by that of MS Dhoni: aged 36 years and 229 days, Dhoni had smashed South Africa for 50 in 2018.
The third oldest Indian to have achieved the feat is Shikhar Dhawan, who was aged 35 years and 1 day when he hit Australia for a half-century in 2020.
