Nilima Ghose
Karnam Malleswari
Answer: Karnam Malleswari
Karnam Malleswari is a former weightlifter who was the first Indian woman to bag an Olympic medal in the sport.
She received several awards during her career. In 1994, she won the Arjuna Award. Five years later, she was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, which is the highest sporting honour in India. She is also the recipient of the Padma Shri.
Malleswari recently said that she is hoping to see Indian weightlifters win medals in the Commonwealth Games, which will be held between July 28 and August 8.
“I expect Indian weightlifters to win medals in the Commonwealth Games this year. We have done this earlier so I expect the same this time around too,” Malleswari told ANI.
“The number of medals we would not be able to get because of the absence of shooting in the competition, we would want to make up for it by winning in other competitions and events,” she added.
