The Lego Group, a privately held firm established in Billund, Denmark, manufactures the Lego brand of plastic building toys. Lego was the world’s largest toy company as of 2021. Lego, the company’s signature product, is made out of variously coloured interlocking plastic bricks that are accompanied by a variety of gears, figurines known as minifigures, and other elements. Lego parts can be combined and connected in a variety of ways to make structures such as automobiles, buildings, and operating robots. Anything built can be disassembled and the pieces repurposed to create new things.

In 1949, the Lego Group began producing the interlocking toy bricks. The brand has spawned films, games, tournaments, and eight Legoland amusement parks. By July 2015, 600 billion Lego parts had been manufactured.

Ole Kirk Christiansen (1891–1958), a carpenter from Billund, Denmark, founded the Lego Group in his workshop in 1932.

In 1936, the Lego Group coined the phrase “only the best is good enough.” Christiansen established this tagline, which is still used today, to encourage his employees to never scrimp on quality, a principle he greatly believed in. Plastic toys accounted for half of the Lego company’s output by 1951, despite the fact that the Danish trade magazine Legetjs-Tidende (“Toy Times”), which visited the Lego factory in Billund in the early 1950s, believed that plastic could never replace traditional wooden toys. Although this is a prevalent view, Lego toys appear to be a notable exception to the hatred of plastic in children’s toys, thanks in part to the high standards set by Ole Kirk.

Christiansen’s son, Godtfred, had become the Lego Group’s junior managing director by 1954. His encounter with an international consumer sparked the concept for a toy system. Godtfred saw Lego bricks as having enormous potential to become a system for creative play, but the bricks still had significant technical issues: their locking ability was restricted, and they were not adaptable. The current brick pattern was created in 1958, but it took five years to locate the suitable substance, ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) polymer. On 28 January 1958, a patent application for the contemporary Lego brick design was filed in Denmark, and afterwards in several other countries.

The Duplo product line, established by the Lego Group in 1969, is a collection of simple bricks with lengths that are double the width, height, and depth of ordinary Lego blocks and are intended for younger children.

Lego released the first minifigures in 1978, which have since become a standard feature in most kits.
