Symonds' breakthrough came at the 2003 World Cup, after making his international debut in 1998. On the challenging surface of Johannesburg, the Australian top order struggled against a super confident Pakistani bowling attack. Before Symonds took over, Pakistan had reduced Australia to 86/4. As Australia settled for 310/8, he hit an unbroken 143 (125). Later, the Australian bowlers bowled Pakistan out for 228.
156 runs against New Zealand, 2005
With his blazing 156-run knock against the Kiwis in Wellington, Symonds brought his A-game in 2005 against New Zealand. During the innings, he hit 12 fours and eight sixes in an attempt to sabotage New Zealand's bowling attack. After 50 overs, Australia totalled 322/5, with Michael Clarke scoring an unbeaten 82. In the end, Australia snatched a two-run victory in the final over.
