The Los Angeles Angels on Friday announced that third baseman Anthony Rendon had suffered a season-ending injury, and would undergo surgery next to repair his right wrist.

The 32-year-old had been sidelined since June 14 after he injured his wrist during a swing in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first major injury to befall Rendon, who is on the third year of a seven year free agent contract with with Angels worth $245 million.

The 32-year-old also saw his season cut short in 2021, when he was limited to playing just 58 games due to myriad problems associated with his groin, knee, and hip.

The year prior, Rendon played only 60 games before the season was abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Rendon’s latest wrist injury isn’t grave enough to send serious alarm bells ringing about his potential to contribute to the team, it does signal a worrying trend.

Most of the injuries to befall Rendon have been of the soft-tissue variety, and experts fear that his fitness issues are likely to get worse as he gets deeper into his 30s. If Rendon indeed continues to suffer injuries that keep him out for long spells, the Angels have some reason to worry, with more than $150 million of contract still left.

Rendon’s latest injury is also the newest blow to the Angeles, who, despite beginning the season in promising fashion, find themselves in trouble.

While the Angels found themselves at a season-best 11 games over .500 on May 15, they went on to lose 14 games in a row, a run that cost manager Joe Maddon his job and led to the Angels crashing out of the American League West race.

Although there’s still plenty of time for a rebound, Rendon’s injury increases the likelihood that yet another season will end in defeat.
