Communal tension broke out in Jodhpur’s Jalori Gate area hours before Eid on Tuesday, leaving at least four policemen injured and prompting the authorities to suspend mobile internet services and impose a curfew in certain areas in the city. 

Here’s all you need to know – 

1. There were clashes between two communities in the early hours of Tuesday over installing a religious flag in connection with Eid.

2. The situation was initially brought under control with heavy deployment of police, however, it soon re-escalated after the Namaz of Eid when some people pelted stones, damaging vehicles.

3. Four policemen were injured in the stone pelting and officers had to use tear gas shells to disperse the mob.

4. Mobile internet services were suspended in the area to check the spread of rumours.

5. Curfew was imposed in several police station limits including Udai Mandir, Nagori Gate, Khanda Phalsa, Pratap Nagar, Dev Nagar, Soor Sagar and Sardarpura

6. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot chaired a high-level review meeting to discuss the situation and sent senior authorities to the city via helicopter.

7. CM Gehlot tweeted on Tuesday, urging the people to maintain peace.

“While respecting the tradition of love and brotherhood of Jodhpur, Marwar, I make a touching appeal to all the parties to maintain peace and cooperate in restoring law and order,” he said.

8. The Parshuram Jayanti festival is also underway in the city. 

BJP state president Satish Poonia said, “Putting up an Islamic flag on the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa by anti-social elements and removing saffron flags put up on Parshuram Jayanti is condemnable.”
