‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is the latest riveting addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Dr Stephen Strange to save the cosmos once again.

Nine years after the events of ‘Doctor Strange,’ and many subsequent films (‘Avengers Infinity War’, ‘Avengers Endgame’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, and so on), the sorcerer is trapped between versions of himself from various ‘Earths’ (it is, after all, the Multiverse), and those attempting to stop the nefarious deeds of these versions.

Marvel movies are known for their extensive use of VFX but rely on real-life locations too. Here’s where ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ was filmed.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ was shot in and around London and Surrey, as well as in the United States, Canada, Iceland, Norway, and Italy. Even though the filming began in December 2020, production was hindered due to the pandemic and the ensuing lockdown in England. The filming was resumed in March 2021, and the shoot was wrapped up a few months later.

New York City, New York

The sequences featuring the magnificent Sanctum Sanctorum and Doctor Strange’s encounter with Gargantos were filmed in New York City. The Freemason’s Hall in London is thought to have functioned as The Illuminati’s headquarters.

In fact, Dr Strange’s apartment in the first film, was shot in Manhattan’s posh Upper West Side.

Surrey, England

Because the studio’s five soundstages range in size from 8000 to 42000 square feet and can accommodate any level of production, a production camp was erected at Longcross Studios in Surrey and a multitude of sequences were shot in a controlled environment. In fact, many scenes from Marvel’s very own ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ were also filmed at this studio.

Somerset, England

Wanda Maximoff and Dr Strange’s meeting in the trailer occurs at the scenic Burrow Hill Cider Farm in Somerset. The team filmed here extensively during April 2021.

Los Angeles, California

After the shoot at the City of Angels was wrapped, it turned out that the newly roped in Raimi wanted to change a few sequences, so many of the reshoots were held in Los Angeles, California in December 2021.

Norway

Some of the scenes in this film are set in the same settings as sequences from other films centered on the ‘Asgardian’ gods Thor and Loki. The mysterious and picturesque beauty of this place plays a great role in creating a supernatural and surreal ambiance.
