The University of Delhi has been in existence for 100 years.

The centenary festivities of Delhi University will commence on May 1, 2022. With the university reaching 100, DU has planned festivities for the entire year of 2022 to commemorate this milestone. 

The university will release a commemorative stamp, an Rs. 100 currency, and a fresh new website. The inaugural ceremony will be placed in the multipurpose hall of DU’s Sports Complex, and a significant number of dignitaries are scheduled to attend.

This academic year, almost 4 lakh candidates fought for DU’s 70,000 available seats. According to a PTI article, DU intends to establish a dedicated engineering faculty, among other things.

An Act of the then-Central Legislative Assembly of British India founded the Institution of Delhi in 1922 as a unitary, teaching, and residential university. 

At the time, Delhi had only four colleges, St. Stephen’s College, founded in 1881, Hindu College, founded in 1899, Zakir Husain Delhi College (then known as The Delhi College), founded in 1792, and Ramjas College, founded in 1917, all of which were later connected with the university.

Initially, the institution comprised two faculties (Arts and Science) and around 750 students.

The university played an important role in the Indian independence struggle and witnessed some pivotal periods in India’s history. Ramjas College students harboured the revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad when he evaded the British authority.

Hindu College, which began in a modest building in Kinari Bazar, Chandni Chowk, was a centre of major political debate throughout India’s independence movement. According to Professor Amrit Kaur Basra, its students were actively involved in the 1942 Quit India Movement.

Following India’s independence, Ramjas College partnered with Lahore University to conduct evening classes for students from across the border.

The University of Delhi is connected with 91 colleges located throughout the city. The university’s two main campuses are North Campus and South Campus. Zakir Husain Delhi Institution, located in the heart of New Delhi, is the city’s oldest college, with a 300-year history.

May 1st 2022 is also anticipated to witness more things as DU celebrates its 100th anniversary. According to a PTI report, Vice President Naidu will also introduce the Undergraduate Curricular Framework (Hindi and Sanskrit versions) and the University of Delhi: A Glimpse, a repository of the varsity’s historical milestones.

All of the ceremonies for DU’s centennial will take place until May 2023. Delhi University has also put aside a budget of Rs. 10 crores to carry out all of the plans for these celebrations.
