Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX CEO, is seriously considering building a social media platform, he tweeted on Saturday.

Musk was responding to a tweet where he was asked if he’d consider building an online platform that works on an open-source algorithm, prioritizes free speech, and keeps propaganda to a minimum.

The entrepreneur is prolific on Twitter himself and has even considered a career as an influencer. However, off late, Musk has been critical of the platform’s policies, saying the social media company is undermining democracy and failing to adhere to principles of free speech.

A day prior to this, Musk put up a Twitter poll asking users if they believed the platform allowed free speech. The tech giant noted, “The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully”. A clear majority of 70% of people said they didn’t believe Twitter allowed free speech.

If Musk moves ahead with this plan, he’d join a growing list of tech entrepreneurs who have come up with their versions of social media platforms to draw users who feel their voices suppressed on the mainstream options like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

Even former US President Donald Trump has launched his own platform, called Truth Social. However, these alternate platforms haven’t had quite the same draw, including Twitter’s competitors Parler and Gettr.

However, Musk has the capital and technical know-how to launch a platform that’d be a viable alternative. The innovator is also known to follow through on his words, even if they’re on Twitter.

Previously, Musk drew attention when he promised to help end world hunger if the United Nations (UN) could show him how his money would aid the process. After the monetary breakdown was provided, reports surfaced of Musk having made a similar matching donation. However, the recipient of the same couldn’t be verified at the time.
