The UK political scene is in disarray as Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to resign from his designation. The British politician has weathered many storms during his time as the PM of the country. However, it looks like his luck has finally ended.

More than a dozen UK government officials have put in their papers following Johnson’s handling of allegations of sexual misconduct by a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP). According to reports in the UK, a group of senior ministers had gone to Downing Street to convince the PM to resign. While Johnson was adamant against the decision initially, new information suggests that he will finally be leaving his post.

The British political scenario has been eventful in the past few days as many have not yet grasped the reasons behind Johnson’s departure. Let’s take a look at five of them.

Chris Pincher saga

The story began when Noa Hoffman, a young reporter for the Sun broke the news that a Conservative MP, Chris Pincher, had resigned from his designation at the party after an evening at the Carlton private members club. More information regarding the evening surfaced soon when Pincher was accused of groping two men at the club.

In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Pincher admitted to drinking “too much” and “embarrassing” himself and others.

It was earlier briefed from Downing Street that the PM did not know about “specific allegations” as he appointed Pincher as deputy chief whip in February. However, the BBC recently reported he had been aware of a formal complaint.

High profile resignations

The MPs were reportedly growing discontent with Boris Johnson and his policies for some time. It soon came to the fore when Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned.

Both former senior members of the government, Sunak and Javid, later criticised the government, the PM in particular, for their decisions.

The British PM called the rest of the cabinet last Tuesday to figure out who would be remaining.

Partygate

Earlier in 2022, PM Boris Johnson was fined for violating lockdown regulations as reports of him attending a gathering at a birthday party in June 2020.

During the first lockdown, the PM also offered an apology after following information regarding him attending a “bring your own booze” party in the Downing Street garden.

Boris Johnson has been under investigation by a Commons Committee since.

Rising inflation and tax

Britain has experienced a sharp rise in inflation in 2022 to 9.1%. While many reasons behind the inflation have been out of control, the government took steps to counter it — like slashing fuel duty by 5p per litre.

However, the British government also added a tax raise in April, which was criticised throughout the country.

In an address to the Parliament, the opposition leader, Sir Keir Starmer, said that he was “In the middle of the worst cost of living crisis for decades.”

“The government chooses to increase taxes on working people,” he added.

Lack of ideas

Since Johnson rose to power with the majority, many critics have stated that the PM lacks focus and ideas.

Dominic Cummings, the PM’s former advisor, has accused him of being an “out-of-control shopping trolley.” Many have also raised questions about Johnson’s philosophy.

In the meantime, Boris Johnson faced several by-elections, which he kept winning. After the most recent win, Johnson was quoted as saying he “would not undergo a psychological transformation.”

However, that statement held little or no concern for the Conservative MPs, who have since taken a stark resolution of the opinion that the Prime Minister must go.
