French Open 2022: All you need to know about the upcoming Grand Slam
- The tournament will start on May 22, 2022
- The winner of the competition will get €1,400,000 prize money
- Players like Roger Federer and Andy Murray will not be playing
The French Open is all set to commence on May 22, 2022, and will go on for nearly three weeks. The final game, which will be played in the men's singles category, is scheduled for June 5.
This year's premier tennis tournament will follow tradition and will be played at the Roland Garros Stadium in Paris. Another tradition that will be followed at the upcoming competition is that all the games will be played on a clay court.
Which players are expected to go big?
While some tennis veterans are already likely to go deep into this year's French Open, some new names have made it to the list.
Rafael Nadal, considered to be the champion of the clay court, is a favourite. After Rome, Nadal will try to win a record-extending 14th French Open title. He lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets in last year’s semifinals in Paris.
Iga Swiatek, Paula Badosa, Garbine Muguruza, Barbora Krejcikova and Simona Halep are expected to be head-turners in the French Open's women's singles category.
What is the prize money?
The winner of the singles tournament at the French Open 2022 -- both men's and women's categories -- will be awarded €1,400,000 each. The runners-up will get €750,000, semi-finalists €375,000 and the quarter-finalists €255,000.18
Those who are eliminated after the end of the first round will also be given €60,000.
Who will be missed?
There are two key omissions from this year's French Open. Tennis legend Roger Federer will not be participating in the upcoming competition. "I feel it is best to skip the clay court season this year and prepare for the grass and hard court seasons", he said in a statement.
Andy Murray also announced that he will not make an appearance at the French Open 2022. He further said that he will skip the entire clay court season and is hopeful to return for Wimbledon later this year.
