The Indian men’s badminton
team defeated defending champions Indonesia in the Thomas Cup final to win the
team championship gold medal at the Impact Arena in Bangkok

After India’s historic win,
Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a
cash reward of Rs 1 crore for the Indian men’s players that scripted history.
He also declared a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh for the support staff of the team.

“To celebrate this
momentous occasion, on behalf of a grateful nation, @BAI_Media is honoured to
announce prize money of Rs 1 crore for our players and Rs 20 lakh for our
support staff,” Sharma said.

“We look forward to several
such national accomplishments in the coming months and years,” he added

In the 72-year-old history
of the sport’s biggest team championship, India’s best prior to this gold
medal-winning performance was a top-four finish that came in 1979.

India, who were regarded as
the underdogs in the tournament, made the most of their blazing form to trump
favourites Indonesia, who were also the defending champions.

Thomas Cup is a 16-team
tournament. The teams are divided into four groups, comprising four teams each.

it 2-0 against Indonesia. And then, in the third game, former World No. 1 and
World Championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth, continuing his winning
streak in Thomas Cup, defeated World No. 8 Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 to
make it 3-0 to open his arms as celebrations began.
