Two Indian-origin families were featured in the top 10 list of the richest people in the United Kingdom. Sri and Gopi Hinduja were jointly named the richest people in the country while Lakshmi Mittal was in the sixth spot with a fortune worth £17 billion.

Sri and Gopi Hinduja, and their extended family, saw a massive increase in their wealth over the last year and were valued at £28.5 billion in the new list published by The Sunday Times.

The two brothers not only beat Sir James Dyson (whose wealth was valued at £23 billion) for the first spot but also registered the largest recorded in the 34 years of the rich list. 

Lakshmi Mittal came in sixth on this year’s list. He is the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaking company, as well as Chairman of stainless steel manufacturer Aperam. His wealth was valued at £17 billion.

Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, along with his wife Akshata Murty, was featured on the list for the first time. Sunak, ranked 222nd on the list with a fortune of £730 million, is serving as the United Kingdom’s Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2020.

Akshata Murthy, a citizen of India, currently owns about 0.9% of Indian IT giant Infosys. She is also the daughter of one of the founders of the tech giant.
