For the second time in three months, India’s 16-year-old Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu astonished World Champion Magnus Carlsen from Norway in the fifth round of the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament on Friday.

As per ANI, on May 20, the two young players clashed in the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament’s fifth round. Rameshbabu commanded the game from the start, advancing to the knockout phase and ultimately beating Carlsen.

The fifth round match of the USD 150,000 online tournament was on the cusp of being a draw when Carlsen made moves that changed the game’s entire perspective. Carlsen’s game saw defeat suddenly after losing his black knight on his 40th move.

On Day 2 of the competition, Rameshbabu earned 12 points to his total, while Carlsen was second behind China‘s Wei Yi. 

Abhimanyu Mishra, the world’s youngest Grand Master, also participated in the 16-man event.

Reportedly, despite the win, the Rameshbabu was displeased.

After Magnus Carlsen’s miscalculation, R Praggnanadhaa exclaimed, “I do not want to win that way!”

With this accomplishment, the Indian Grandmaster is now in sixth place on the scoreboard.

At the conclusion of Day 2 of the tournament, Carlsen stands in third place with 12 points, whereas China’s Wei Yi is in first place with 18 points.

Earlier this year, Praggnanandhaa beat Carlsen in the Airthings Masters online rapid tournament, with the latter making up for his setback at the Oslo Esports Cup in April.

At the age of ten years, ten months, and nineteen days, Praggnanandhaa became the youngest international master in history in 2016.

The Chessable Masters is a 9-day tournament that is part of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, a larger series of tournaments.
