GT lost only three wickets – Shubman Gill (18 off 17), Matthew Wade (20 off 15) and captain Hardik Pandya (7 off 6) – before Wriddhiman Saha, who played a breezy 67 runs innings off 57 balls to power the Ahmedabad side to a comfortable victory with five balls to spare.

Saha, opening the innings, hit eight boundaries and a six to decorate his unbeaten innings. He also shared a 59 runs partnership with Gill, who was dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana in the first delivery of the eighth over. Pathirana took two wickets. His second victim was Pandya.

Earlier, opting to bat first, CSK lost Devon Conway in the third over when Mohammed Shami struck for his solitary wicket in the match. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, however, was quick on his feet to score a toiling 53 off 49 balls. He sent the ball to the fence four times and six.

He formed a 57-run partnership with Moeen Ali but CSK never found the rhythm they needed, failing badly in the last five overs as the batters couldn’t find the fence for a single time in the PowerPlay. For GT, Mohammed Shami was the stand out bowler with a two-wicket haul for 59 runs, while Rashid Khan, Alzarri Joseph and R Sai Kishore picked a wicket each in a disciplined bowling show.

On a slow wicket, Gaikwad wasn’t getting the required big. After Gaikwad completed fifty off 44 balls, N Jagadeesan smacked a four and six off Kishore to boost the scoring rate going into the last five overs. But Gujarat triggered a slowdown from which Chennai could never come out.

Gaikwad danced down the track to play across the line but was caught at deep mid-wicket off Rashid.
