Jasprit Bumrah is not having the best Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2022, but he is still an essential element of the Mumbai Indians squad and has been gradually regaining form. On Tuesday, in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium, he set a new record for India in T20 cricket.

Bumrah reached 250 wickets in T20 cricket after dismissing Washington Sundar with the final delivery of SRH’s innings. He became the first Indian pacer to accomplish this feat. With 223 wickets in the format, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is second on the leaderboard. Overall, he is the fifth Indian bowler to achieve the record, following Ravichandran Ashwin (274), Yuzvendra Chahal (271), Piyush Chawla (270), and Amit Mishra (262).

Bumrah bowled a tight penultimate over, allowing only one boundary, which was hammered off a lofted cover drive by SRH skipper Kane Williamson. Bumrah let up just three more runs in his final four deliveries, the last of which was Sundar’s dismissal – a slower yorker that the batter failed to connect with, leaving the stumps rocked.

Bumrah, who made his MI debut in 2013, in 2021 became the franchise’s sixth player to appear in 100 IPL games. In addition, he was only the sixth player to appear in 100 or more games for a single club, trailing only RCB’s Virat Kohli, MI’s Kieron Pollard, KKR’s Sunil Narine, and MI’s Lasith Malinga.

Notably, Bumrah’s first IPL wicket was of former Indian captain Virat Kohli. He has dismissed him three more times since then. Bumrah’s greatest IPL season was in 2020, when he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker (27) and had the best bowling average  of 14.96. During the 2020 IPL season, he also scripted the record of being the third-youngest bowler to reach 100 wickets.
