The IPL 2022 season began on March 26 with the Chennai Super Kings taking against Kolkata Knight Riders at Mumbai‘s Wankhede Stadium. Ten teams will square off in the round-robin stage, which will last two months. The final will be placed on May 29 in Ahmedabad.

This year’s league matches will be held at four different locations: Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, and Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.  There will be 12 doubleheaders, with the first match beginning at 3:30 pm and the second beginning at 7:30 pm IST.

The IPL roster now includes two new clubs. KL Rahul captains the Lucknow Super Giants, which are owned by entrepreneur Sanjiv Goenka, while Hardik Pandya captains the Gujarat Titans. MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli will not be captaining their respective teams, CSK and RCB, in 2022. Instead, Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Plessis will carry the armband.

The 10 franchises were divided into two virtual groupings. They were seeded based on the number of times they won the IPL or advanced to the finals.

Group A: Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants.

Group B: Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.

During the league phase, the clubs will play a total of 14 games. They will play twice against each team in their group as well as the side in the same row in the opposite group, while just once against the remaining teams. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs.

Orange Cap

The hitter who scores the most runs during the season receives the Orange Cap. Brendon McCullum was the first player to win the Orange Cap, while Shaun Marsh was the first to win. David Warner of Australia has won the Orange Cap three times, in 2015, 2017, and 2019, followed by Chris Gayle, who has won it twice. Virat Kohli holds the record for most runs scored in a single edition of the IPL, with 973 runs for RCB in 2016.

Jos Buttler of the Rajasthan Royals is the leading run-scorer and currently owns the Orange Cap. He has scored 718 runs at an average of 51.28. Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul is second in the standings with 537 runs. He is followed by Quinton de Kock of Lucknow Supergiants. Shikhar Dhawan is now fourth on the standings with 460 runs. Hardik Pandya, captain of Gujarat Titans has scored 453 runs and is now in the fifth position with an average of 45.30.
