Delhi Capitals Opener David Warner sacrificed his century for his team vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rovman Powell revealed after the first innings.

The 35-year-old Australian cricketer needed eight runs to complete his ton but chose to let Powell stay on strike and hit big runs for the team.

Powell then hit SRH pacer Umran Malik for three boundaries and one six to help his team go past the 200-run mark in the final over of the match at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium on Thursday.

“I asked DW if I should get a single to allow his 100 but he told me, ‘that’s not how the game is played’, and told me to go big,” Powell said after the first innings.

“Sometimes, I could not hit it as well as I wanted to, some of the swings were planned. The wicket was good, I planned and shaped up for the full and slower balls and the shots came off towards the end.

“I chatted with Rishabh about my batting position, I told him to trust me at 5 as my game against spin. I tried to get in for 15 balls and then accelerate in the next 20. The pitch is a very good one and the ball is coming on well but I think we have enough, we need to get wickets at the top and should be able to defend this,” he added.

Sharing Powell’s quote on their Twitter handle, DC called Warner the “ultimate team man.”

Warner struck his fourth half century of the season with a 58-ball 92 not out in a magnificent batting display. Powell (67 not out off 35) joined the party later on. The duo stitched 122 runs for the unconquered fourth wicket as they scored 70 runs from the final five overs.
