Veteran writer-lyricist Gulzar says he was overjoyed when  given the opportunity to work with singer KK on the song “Dhoop paani bahne de” from Srijit Mukherji’s Hindi film “Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga.”

KK, or Krishnakumar Kunnath, died last week at the age of 53 after a  heart attack during a concert in Kolkata.

“In ‘Sherdil,’ Srijit has done me a favour. Not only did I get to write for such a lovely picture, but I also got to meet KK after a long time,” Gulzar remarked.

Gulzar, who originally collaborated with the vocalist on his 1996 film “Maachis,” said the newly released song would always hold a special place in his heart.

“I was overjoyed when he arrived to sing the song for ‘Sherdil,’ but it’s a tragedy that this had to be one of his final songs.” In a statement, the 87-year-old songwriter stated, “It’s like he came to say farewell.”

KK was best known for songs like “Tadap Tadap,” “Beete Lamhein,” and “Tadap Tadap.”

“Aankhon Mein Teri,” as well as “Pal” and “Yaaraon,” are indie pop tunes.

“We grew up listening to Gulzar saab’s poetry. We’ve grown up listening to KK’s voice in every heartfelt situation. So for me, it’s a double dream come true,” Mukherji explained.

T-Series and Reliance Entertainment, in collaboration with Match Cut Productions, released the single ‘Dhoop paani bahne de’ on Monday night. The music was composed by Shantanu Moitra.

KK, according to Moitra, was ecstatic with the song and performed it “like it were his own.”

“He informed me that after two decades, this song had brought Gulzar sahib back to him. He was also ecstatic that he would perform this song live because it is about conservation and the young should hear it.”

“Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga” will be released in theatres on June 24.
