Mahendra Singh Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020. Team India immediately began looking for his successor who could manage the role of a keeper-batsman. Despite having many wicketkeeper choices, India continues to struggle to find the proper replacement for MS Dhoni.

The 24-year-old Rishabh Pant has improved his game since late 2020 and is slowly and steadily establishing himself as an important player for India across all formats. He has emerged as the front-runner to fill the shoes of a wicketkeeper-batter in the team. The Delhi Capital‘s captain has many impressive performances in his name for the Indian Cricket team. Rishabh Pant’s outstanding performances include Test hundreds in difficult overseas conditions, along with his power-hitting abilities. He has also made significant progress in his wicketkeeping.

The left-hander has served as India’s vice-captain in the recent home series and has been named as the Indian team’s vice-captain for the forthcoming home T20Is versus South Africa. However, he could not light up the IPL 2022 with his performance. He has scored 340 runs at an average of 30.91 in 14 matches. DC finished fifth in the league and missed out on qualifying for the playoffs after losing to the bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI) in their last league stage match. Pant has also been disappointing with his DRS decisions in crucial games.

But the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes he will improve with time. “Pant should not be compared to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni has a huge amount of experience. He has captained in over 500 IPL, Test, and ODI games. As a result, comparing Rishabh to Dhoni is unfair, ” Ganguly said during a promotional event on Tuesday.
