Janelle Monáe came out as non-binary in the most recent episode of ‘Red Table Talk’, hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield Norris.

On 10 January 2020, the 36-year-old posted the hashtag “#IAmNonBinary,” but later explained that this was “in support of Non-Binary Day and to raise more notice to the community.”

“It resonated with me, especially as someone who has challenged gender limits since the beginning of my career,” Monáe said at the time to The Cut. “I feel feminine energy, male energy, and energy I can’t even put into words.”

However, according to NBC News, Monáe confirmed on the April 20 broadcast of ‘Red Table Talk’ that she is non-binary. In a 2018 Rolling Stone cover article, the Grammy nominee admitted to being pansexual. Monáe stated at the time that she had previously identified as bisexual, but “later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

“I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely,” Monáe said on ‘Red Table Talk’. “I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ If I am from God, I am everything. I am everything, but I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything beyond the binary.”

Monáe, who has yet to specify which pronouns they use, also revealed what it was like to grow up in a “very conservative Baptist” family and how the coming out process was very personal to them.

Monáe responded to ‘Red Table Talk’ co-host Willow Smith’s question about speaking her truth, saying, “Somebody said, ‘If you don’t work out the things that you need to work out first before you share with the world, then you’ll be working it out with the world.’ That’s what I didn’t want to do. So I thought I needed to have all my answers correct, I don’t want to say the wrong thing.”

Monáe went on to say that she notices people’s energy and their gender or sex. “I don’t see how you identify,” she said. “And I feel like that opens you up to fall in love with whoever, with any beautiful spirit.”

Monáe’s next project is a supporting role in Rian Johnson’s murder thriller ‘Knives Out 2’, which will be released this fall in cinemas on Netflix.
