Talk show hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon had a surprise in store for late-night television viewers on April Fools’ Day, celebrated on the first day of the month, by swapping places and hosting each other’s shows.

The audience present in the studio and viewers at home were all surprised to see Kimmel come on for ‘The Tonight Show’, interviewing Hugh Jackman and Bridget Everett, while Fallon took charge of ‘ Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ with Justin Timberlake and Kimmel’s aunt Chippy as his guests. Both shows had the Red Hot Chili Peppers as the guest band.

At Kimmel’s show, which Fallon hosted, the comedian took the stage telling the crowd “Hi, I’m Jimmy”, and adding, “Settle down, you’re going to offend the other Jimmy”, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Fallon admitted that the hosts had been planning this for four years and quipped that it was a distant second in terms of surprises on the ABC network. This, of course, was Fallon’s reference to the Oscar slap where Will Smith hit Chris Rock for making a joke, which brought Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett’s alopecia into focus.

Following Fallon’s monologue, the two hosts did a live check in, and Fallon quipped “Jimmy and I wanted to have some fun with people mixing us up all the time.” He further explained how he’d once spoken to a fan for twenty minutes only for them to note they loved Jimmy Kimmel. Fallon added, “I couldn’t be mistaken for a better guy”.

When Timberlake came onto the show, he did Fallon’s take on Kimmel’s Mean Tweets, which became Sweet Tweets for the night. Kimmel’s aunt Chippy, who had no idea of the swap, shared her thoughts on the talk show host’s sense of humour and pranks, saying “There’s no end; it never ends”.

As the show wrapped, Fallon thanked producers and writers for putting in the work to pull off this swap and noted “Tonight has been so much fun”.
