Independent candidate from Jiribam assembly constituency Md. Achad Uddin has defeated Jiri Budhachandra Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 416 votes.

Jiribam assembly constituency has Badrur Rahman of the Indian National Congress (INC) taking on Jiri Budhachandra Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Md. Achab Uddin of the Janata Dal (United) this year in the Manipur assembly elections.

Ashab Uddin (Independent) had won the Jiribam seat in 2017 when the INC swept Manipur winning 28 of Manipur’s 60 assembly seats. Uddin had beaten his closest rival Thoudam Debendra Singh by over 1,650 votes. Singh had contested that election on a Congress ticket.

In 2012, the seat was won by Thoudam Debendra Singh of the INC. 

Jiribam falls under the Imphal East district and the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, which is made up of 28 assembly seats.

Lorho S. Pfoze of Naga People’s Front represented Outer Manipur as a member of Parliament in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Pfoze defeated Houlim Shokhopao Mate from the BJP with a margin of  73,782 votes.

The Jiribam assembly constituency voted in the second phase of the Manipur elections on March 5, 2022, along with 21 other constituencies. 

Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including Uttar Pradesh.
