Lil Nas X expressed his discontent towards the BET Awards in his “Late To Da Party (F*CK BET)” music video featuring NBA YoungBoy. Released on June 24, the video criticised the BET Awards for not nominating his largely successful album “Montero” under any category. The album was previously nominated for five Grammys, two Brit awards, and five Billboard Music Awards. It also went on to win a Billboard award for Top Rap Song.

The news of the award nominations came after Nas’s performance for the 2021 BET awards, which included a kiss between him and one of the male backup dancers. The performance received major homophobic backlash. This is not the first time Lil Nas X has been the subject of bigotry for the expression of his identity. In a deleted tweet, Nas remarked, “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”
