In the three days of standing within the witness box, Hollywood’s exiled icon Johnny Depp has desperately tried to convince a jury that his former wife Amber Heard’s domestic abuse allegations against him are false and have brought his career to a dead end.

Heard’s lawyers have added fuel to the fire, and have constantly spoken about the three-time Oscar nominee’s history of alcohol and drug consumption in an attempt to erode his trustworthiness.

Despite vicious allegations, Depp has managed to portray a calm demeanor for the most part, except for a few instances of briefly losing his cool. When asked by lawyer Ben Rottenborn to simply respond to a question with a “yes” or “no”, Depp struck back: “Nothing is simple in this case.”

With the trial set to resume on Monday, here are some key observations in Depp and Heard’s defamation case.

Lyrical references

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor seems to like responding to questions with a dash of metaphors.

When asked about the allegations against him, Depp lyrically compared it to “running between drops of lava.”

“You’re trying to run between raindrops that kill you and destroy you,” he said.

Heard’s stoicism

While Depp has worn earrings, rings, a ponytail and stylish three-piece suits to the trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court, ‘Aquaman’ star Amber Heard has been opting for pantsuit ensembles with a new hairdo every day.

Mostly nonchalant during the proceedings, Heard is mostly seen whispering or taking down notes. However, she was briefly knocked out of her stoicism when she visibly flinched while looking at a video of a furious Depp slamming cabinet doors in a kitchen.

Text threads

While Heard resented Depp for having a tattoo for former girlfriend Winona Ryder that read “Winona Forever”, Depp said that he was suspicious that his former wife was having an illicit romance with actor James Franco.

Depp was also questioned about a series of text messages that featured him asking for advice on sobriety from singer Elton John.

The court also found out several raging texts sent by Depp in which he called Heard a “slippery wh*re”.

Responding to this, the 58-year-old justified, “when I write a text… it’s a canvas, it’s a painting.”

Depp is suing Heard for defaming her in an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018 in which she accused him of domestic violence and abuse.
