Manchester United‘s transfer woes may finally be nearing an end, with reports suggesting that the Red Devils are closing in on a deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

A prime target of new manager Erik ten Hag, United had been negotiating with the Blaugrana for the Dutchman’s signature over the past couple of weeks, but talks had stalled due to disagreements over de Jong’s valuation.

However, Sky Sports News on Tuesday reported that the deadlock had been broken, and that United and Barcelona had reached a ‘broad agreement’ for 25-year-old’s move to Manchester.

According to Sky reporter Michael Bridge, United and Barcelona have reached an informal agreement for de Jong that will see the Red Devils pay €65 million plus performance-related add-ons. However, discussions are still on to iron out finer details before a deal is agreed upon.

While de Jong has yet to agree to personal terms with United, Bridge claimed that personal terms were “not expected to be a problem,” especially given the fact that ten Hag and de Jong worked together earlier at Ajax and share a good relationship.

After three stellar seasons at Ajax that saw the Eredivisie side make it to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1997, de Jong signed for Barcelona in 2019 for an initial fee of €75 million, and quickly became a mainstay of the Blaugrana’s midfield.

An accomplished passer of the ball and a progressive ball carrier boasting neat control, de Jong could add a kind of creativity that was largely absent from United’s midfield last season as the club stuttered to a sixth placed finish, 11 points behind fifth placed Arsenal.

De Jong’s addition, if completed soon, would be a massive boost for United, who fly to Thailand in the second week of July to begin their pre-season preparations.
