A 72-year-old Ohio man heard a ‘hissing’ noise and has been diagnosed as the first person in the world with a “whistling scrotum”, according to a new study by the American Journal of Casa Reports.

He was rushed to the local emergency complaining about his bizarre condition and with a swollen face, and out of breath. A chest X-ray of the 72-year-old revealed an excessive amount of air floating within his body, causing a lung collapse. The doctors reported that to avoid permanent damage to the heart and lungs, this condition leading to death had to be treated.

The Daily Mail reported that the whistling was discovered to be an open wound on the left side of his scrotum. The injury, leftover from testicle surgery to reduce swelling five months earlier, allowed the trap air to move out. Two plastic tubes were inserted in his chests to release the excessive air from the lungs. He was transferred to another hospital, said Dr. Brant Bickford.

The deteriorated condition made the doctors insert the third tube. The patient was discharged from the hospital three day later in a stable condition. Medics describe his condition of air trapped in his scrotum and abdomen for the following two years as “abnormally long time”.

The condition in which air becomes trapped in the scrotum is known as pneumoscrotum. The medical literature has only witnessed 60 such cases so far.

“Whether the air escape attenuated the patient’s presentation and led to a more favorable outcome will never be known,” said Dr Brant Bickford. An unusual condition about the case was how long it took for the air to build up inside the scrotum, perineum and things of the 72 year old.
