The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in San San Bernardino County, California, was temporarily placed under lockdown after “a weapon was inadvertently discharged.” The incident took place shortly before 9 am on Monday.

“We have received reports of shots fired on board MCAGCC. The MCAGCC Provost Marshals Office is currently responding to the situation. The installation has entered a lockdown state and all personnel are required to shelter in place. We will issue updates when available,” the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) tweeted around 10 am.

In a subsequent tweet, MAGTF said that the “report of shots fired came anonymously.”

The Shelter in Place order was lifted around 12 pm. 

“The installation is secure and base personnel are free to resume activity,” MAGTF tweeted.

The base confirmed that no one was injured in the incident and that the investigation was ongoing.

“At this time, we can confirm that a weapon was inadvertently discharged. No injuries have been reported. this incident is under investigation,” MAGTF tweeted.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department tweeted that their personnel are working on the response as well.

The 29 Palms, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, is the largest in the United States. It is adjacent to the city of Twentynine Palms in southern San Bernardino County, California, and is officially called Twentynine Palms Base. The base, with a population of 8,413, covers a total area of 596,288 acres (931.7 sq mi).
