Met Gala 2022 got this year’s ‘desi’ element after entrepreneur Natasha Poonawalla walked onto the red carpet wearing an outfit designed by India’s top designer Sabyasachi. The fashion mogul sent out a detailed social media post after Poonawalla walked the red carpet.

The golden-coloured saree was one of the very few outfits at the event that catered to the Indian taste. The outfit, which seems to be a hit or miss on this year’s theme, was highly appreciated by fans of Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

The Indian fashion designer revealed that since his college days he had wondered how a saree would play out at Western events like Met Gala. “For me, the sari is a truly unique and versatile garment that owns its identity even as it transcends boundaries and geographies”, Sabyasachi wrote on Instagram.

While breaking down the idea behind the dress, Sabyasachi linked his creation to this year’s theme for the Met Gala (‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion, or ‘Gilded Glamour’).

“For the 2022 Met Gala, themed ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’, Natasha Poonawalla’s vision was to interpret the dress code ‘gilded glamour’ with an Indian gaze that revels in its multi-culturalism and authenticity. She wears a Schiaparelli hand-forged metal bustier paired with a custom Sabyasachi couture sari and trail”, the designer wrote on his Instagram.

While multiple Indian-origin individuals have walked down the Met Gala red carpet before, wearing Indian outfits is definitely a road less travelled.

Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Isha Ambani collectively have made more than half a dozen appearances at the Met Gala in the last decade. However, none of them came close to wearing a saree.

Sudha Reddy, an Indian-origin philanthropist, came close last year after she wore haute couture by Falguni and Shane Peacock, media reports suggest.
