The Mets and Cardinals cleared benches after a brawl broke out after Yoan Lopez threw high at Nolan Arenado. The two teams got involved in a scrum on Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis

Genesis Cabrera, on a 3-2 pitch in the top of the eighth inning, threw a fastball directly into J.D. Davis’ foot that forced him out of the game. Later, Arenado took exception, screaming at Lopez that led things to boil over.

Arenado first nodded in acknowledgement as Tomas Nido tried to ease his frustration. However, the Cardinals designated hitter pushed him aside and started screaming toward Lopez.

Pete Alonso, who was hit in the head during last night’s game, was pulled out of the pile by Cardinals first-base coach Stubby Clapp and taken to the ground.

Home-plate umpire Jeremie Rehak ejected Arenado and Clapp from the game after both benches and bullpens quickly cleared. Arenado has been one of the top players in the MLB and is a very early favorite for the National League MVP.

A large huddle of pushing and shoving could be seen with some players wrestling to the ground.

The Cardinals led 10-5 at the time of the incident.
