Top Gun: Maverick‘ has been soaring at the box office, having grabbed eyeballs with its high-octane dogfights. Like most of the cast, Miles Teller, who plays Goose’s son, was also in the cockpit of a fighter plane while filming the action sequences. However, the 35-year-old suffered an allergic reaction after taking to the skies and found he had jet fuel in his bloodstream.

Speaking to Seth Meyers on the ‘Late Night’ show, Teller said “We landed, and I thought, ‘Man, I’m not feeling too good'”, adding, “I was really hot and I just started itching like crazy. So I got out of the jet. I’m just covered in hives. Head to toe. I go to a doctor. I do a blood analysis. I’m in an oatmeal bath that night. I have sensitive skin anyway, truth be told, Irish-Scottish skin. No dyes, no nothing.”

When the test results came back, it turned out that the actor had “flame-retardant, pesticide and jet fuel” in his bloodstream. He recovered and told co-star Tom Cruise about the diagnosis. Cruise, who plays daredevil pilot Maverick, in the original and sequel, heard Teller had jet fuel in his blood. The 59-year-old replied without skipping a beat, as per Teller, “Yeah, I was born with it, kid.”

The ‘Whiplash’ actor revealed, “So that was a very Tom moment for me.”

Speaking of casting Teller, director Joseph Kosinski told Vulture, “I showed Tom a picture of Miles because Miles has blond hair in that film. And I think I’d Photoshopped a moustache on him. I’m like, ‘I just worked with this kid. He’s really good.’ We still went through the audition process, and Miles won the role on his own.”

In the sequel, Maverick processes the residual trauma of losing his wingman, Goose, with a little help from Teller’s Bradley Bradshaw, who goes by the callsign ‘Rooster’.
