Manchester United faced Arsenal at Emirates, in a fixture where it was crucial for Ralf Rangnick’s side to win. However, the Red Devils came away with a single goal, while conceding three to the Gunners. Even in a lacklustre United performance, for whom football seemed a chore, Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes’ performance deserves special mention. The number 18 missed a penalty and went in for a nasty challenge, avoiding what would have been a red.

Fernandes didn’t have the best match of his career, having a chip shot blocked early in the game, and then failing to convert a penalty that’d have equalized the score with Arsenal at that point of the game. Later, the Portuguese went for a vicious challenge on Nuno Tavares. Making no play for the ball, Bruno Fernandes went in with studs up, catching his compatriot above the ankle.

It should have ordinarily been a red, and there was a VAR review but Fernandes remained on the field.

Fernandes’ form in the last couple of matches has left a lot to be desired. Usually the architect of passes, the Portuguese failed to be imposing in the fixture against Norwich, barely making an impact in the first half. This drew the ire of fans, with many pointing out that Bruno Fernandes needs to improve his game.

Then, in the Anfield romping from Liverpool, where United lost 4-0, Fernandes went into a late challenge involving Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Merseyside right back. The Portuguese kicked him after having gotten rid of the ball. This earned him another yellow.

In an interview with Sky Sports, after the match, Fernandes said, “We are not fighting for anything at the moment. You can see the difference by the points. I don’t need to be here saying about the difference of the level. We have to look at ourselves, from top to bottom and understand what is going wrong.”

With two consecutive yellows in the Liverpool and Arsenal fixtures, Fernandes is set to miss the Chelsea fixture on April 29.
