Mohamed Salah on Friday extended his contract with Liverpool till 2025, ending months of speculation about his future and opening the door to Merseyside and indeed Premier League immortality.

Salah, who turned 30 this year, had joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017, and quickly established his place among the world’s elite goal scorers, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in his first season with the Reds, and breaking Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season.

At the time, many detractors had suggested that the Egyptian, like so many Premier League players before him, would be a one-season wonder. How wrong they were.

In the next two seasons – 2018/19 and 2019/2020 – Salah would help Liverpool to a UEFA Champions League trophy and a Premier League trophy, and would go on to bag his second Golden Boot award.

In the 2020/21 season, which was marred by the COVID-19 pandemic and long-term injuries to Liverpool’s main centre-back pairing, Salah would go on to bag 31 goals in 51 appearances for the club.

Last season, Salah also bagged 31 goals in 51 appearances, winning the FA Cup and the EFL Cup in the process. He also helped Liverpool stay in the race for a potential quadruple, a dream that collapsed after Manchester City won the Premier League in spectacular fashion in the last match of the season and Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

While many may have taken such a crushing end to the season to heart, Salah seems determined to not let it bother him. And why should he be bothered?

Described by Jurgen Klopp as a “machine” whose ability, skill level, and decision-making “gets higher each season,” Salah is on the verge of scripting history.

With several Premier League records, including the most number of goals scored in a 38-game season, under his belt, Salah is now eyeing a place at the very top of Liverpool’s scoring charts.

The Egyptian has already scored 156 goals in 254 appearances across all competitions, with 118 of those goals coming in the Premier League. That puts him shoulder-to-shoulder with Liverpool legend Michael Owen, who also has 118 PL goals to his name.

Above Salah are only two names: Liverpool’s former talisman Steven Gerrard with 120 goals, and legendary striker Robbie Fowler, with 128.

With a mere 11 goals separating the forward from going down in history as Liverpool’s highest goal scorer in the Premier League, Salah, who is already a Kop legend, seems destined for immortality.
