The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual American hot dog eating competition held on July 4th at Nathan’s Famous restaurant in BrooklynNew York.

The event, which returns after two years to the iconic corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues, dates back to the Fourth of July in 1916 when it was held for the first time.

What are the rules for Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest?

-Competitors have ten minutes to eat as many hot dogs and buns as they can.

-They are permitted to drink water to aid in eating, dipping, or drenching.

-To be counted, participants must keep their food down for the duration of the competition.

-In the event of a tie, there will be a five hot dog “eat-off,” in which the person who can eat five hot dogs the fastest will be declared the winner.

When and where is the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest taking place?

The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest will take place Monday, with the women’s competition being held at 8:15 pm IST and the men’s competition taking place at 9:30 pm IST.

The hot dog eating contest will be aired live on ESPN3, ESPNews and the ESPN app. The event will also be available on FuboTV.   

What is the prize money for winners?

The purse for last year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest was $40,000, with $10,000 going to the winners, $5,000 going to second place, $2,500 going to third place, $1,500 going to fourth place, and $1,000 going to fifth place. It’s unclear whether the prize money will be the same this year.

This year’s event features a pair of competitive eating legends, as Joey Chestnut seeks to successfully defend his men’s Mustard Belt for the third time, and Miki Sudo makes her highly anticipated return to the women’s competition.

History

In order to settle a dispute about who was the most patriotic, four immigrants allegedly arranged a hot dog eating competition at Nathan’s Famous stand on Coney Island on July 4, 1916, according to Nathan’s promoter Mortimer “Morty” Matz.

Since around 1972, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has been carried out annually at its original location on Coney Island, along with Independence Day.
