California Governor Gavin Newsom‘s office announced on Twitter that he was keeping a close eye on the situation.

“No one should have to fear going to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, community, and all those impacted by this tragic event,” the tweet read.

The incident occurred near a number of places of worship, including Catholic, Lutheran, and Methodist churches, as well as a Jewish synagogue.

The shooting occurred just one day after an 18-year-old man shot and killed ten people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.

The mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo was labelled a racist hate crime by police. According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia on Sunday, “The evidence that we have uncovered so far makes no mistake that this is an absolute racist hate crime. It will be prosecuted as a hate crime. This is someone who has hate in their heart, soul, and mind.”
