Rohit Sharma was dismissed for two runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Monday. His side, the Mumbai Indians, eventually faced a 52-run defeat.

However, the MI skipper’s dismissal, a caught behind the wicket, left the team’s head coach, himself, commentators and several fans baffled. Was Rohit Sharma out or was it an umpiring blunder?

On the last ball of the first over in the second innings, Sharma was cramped by a scrambled seam short of a length delivery KKR pacer Tim Southee. He was trying to tuck the ball to the leg when it hit his thigh pad, flew off to wicketkeeper Sheldon Jackson, who completed a low catch.

KKR appealed strongly but the umpire declined. Shreyas Iyer then toon a DRS call, asking the third umpire to intervene.

The initial replay showed that there was a lot of spike even when the ball had not met the bat. The snickometer showed a spike after the ball had passed. However, there was no clarity.

The third umpire chose to trust the technology and asked the on-field umpire to overturn his decision to out. Rohit Sharma was visibly annoyed and coach Mahela Jaywardane looked baffled.

With the dismissal, the Mumbai Indians skipper’s poor run in the IPL 2022 continues. The 35-year-old has scored 2pp runs in 11 games.

His side was bowled out for 113 runs in 17.3 overs.

“I would take that total on that pitch. Was a great effort from the bowling unit, Bumrah was special. Disappointed the way we batted. Poor from the batters. Not really (difficulty of batting on this pitch). We are playing our fourth game here and we know what to expect here. We know seam bowlers will get some help from the pitch. We didn’t get partnerships and you need partnerships chasing a total like that. I don’t think so (if MI could have restricted KKR to a lower total)” Sharm said after the match.
