Kylian Mbappe on Saturday announced that he is renewing his Paris Saint Germain contract and will play for the French giants till 2025. This came as the 23-year-old was ‘one step away’ from joining La Liga outfit Real Madrid

“I wanted to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain, and of course I am very happy about it,” Mbappe stated when the agreement was announced.

The French forward has been a part of PSG since August 2017. He scored 28 times for them, including a hattrick on Saturday against Metz, in 2021-22 to win the Ligue 1 golden boot.

“I would like to thank the President, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, for his confidence, his understanding and his patience. I also have a thought for all the supporters of Paris Saint-Germain, in France and around the world, for their countless expressions of affection, especially in recent months. It is together, united and ambitious, that we will take up the most magical bets,” Mbappe further added. The details of the contract have not been revealed yet.

The announcement was made just before PSG’s Ligue 1 game, last this season, against Metz. Even the team players did not know about Mbappe’s decision, midfielder Ander Herrera said.

Herrera said that the dressing room found out when the rest of the world did.

“The PSG dressing room found out at the same time as the rest of the world. I don’t know if [Mbappe] told Achraf [Hakimi] or someone close to him, but I had no idea,” Herrera said, according to report from Marca.

The 32-year-old added that the players were taken by surprise when they saw the ceremony that had been planned for Mbappe’s new deal.

“After lunch we started to see all the news that was coming out in Spain, friends write to you. We thought that something was going to be said later. Then, in the stadium, when he wasn’t in the dressing room and there was something set up on the pitch, it surprised us. I think the club did it very well. Let’s enjoy Kylian for the coming years. It has become clear that he could become the most important player in the club’s history here. We know that we are an attractive club with a beautiful project. I would be surprised if he had left,” he added.
