Premier League leaders Manchester City had a tough night away to Southampton, and dropped their first points in the league since November last year, after winning 12 consecutive games on the trot.

The Saints opened the scoring at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Saturday when Southampton right-back Kyle Walker Peters dispatched a cross from Nathan Redmond with a sweet volley with the outside of his right foot in the seventh minute. Southampton scored again in the 23rd minute but Armando Broja was ruled offside, keeping the score at 1-0.

As one would expect, Southampton’s lead did not deter league leaders City from taking control of the game, and the visitors went on to dominate possession, creating a multitude of chances along the way.

The visitors came close to equalising around the 40 minute mark but was denied by an excellent save from Saints goalkeeper Ben Foster.

The match remained 1-0 in Southampton’s favour at half-time, and the hosts looked comfortable with their gameplan of defending against City’s onslaught and hitting Pep Guardiola‘s side on the counter.

Southampton began the second half strongly, with Broja coming close early in the second half. However, City increasingly grew into the game as the half drew on, and Rodri almost equalised in the 59th minute but hit the crossbar.

City did not have to wait too long for an equaliser, and centre-back Aymeric Laporte headed past Foster from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick in the 65th minute.

Pep Guardiola’s side looked like they would steal the show when Kevin De Bruyne struck the post with a curling effort from right outside the penalty area in the 70th minute.

However, despite their dominance on the ball, City could not muster an equaliser, and the game ended 1-1.

City are still top of the Premier League, with 57 points from 21 games, while Liverpool are second with 45 points from 21 games.

The Reds will be looking to close the gap when they face Crystal Palace on Sunday.
