Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jaylon Ferguson died on June 21 at the age of 26 from the combined effects of fentanyl and cocaine, a spokesman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said.

Maryland Department of Health spokesman Chase Cook told USA TODAY Sports that Ferguson’s manner of death was ruled to be an accident.

The 26-year-old was found unresponsive by Baltimore police at his home. Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report of a “questionable death.” At the time, police said that they found no signs of trauma or foul play.

“We are profoundly saddened by the tragic passing of Jaylon Ferguson,” the Ravens said in a statement released after Ferguson’s death. “He was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and infectious personality. We express our heartfelt condolences to Jaylon’s family and friends as we mourn a life lost much too soon.”

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley also shared their thoughts after Ferguson’s death.

“Jaylon was a good-hearted, gentle person who loved his family and his team,” Harbaugh said. “He was a joy to talk with and be around every day. You always wanted to see and talk to ‘Ferg.’ Our prayers and our help go to his family.”

“Going against him in practice, he would always tell me when I was doing a good job, even when it meant it was against himself,” Stanley said. “He was so excited every time he had a new kid who was about to be born. He always talked about them.”

Ferguson’s fiancée, Doni Smith, wrote on Instagram that his funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at Magnolia Full Gospel Baptist Church in Saint Francisville, Louisiana.

Ferguson played three years for the Ravens after the team selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft.
